Why does a lowering amplitude of a pendulum not affect a grandfathers ability to tell time?

As a pendulum swings back and forth in the real world, it's amplitude slowly gets lower. This happens inside a grandfather clock as well, but does not affect its ability to keep time. Why isn't this a problem?
