Is buying electronics at thrift stores a bad or smart money move?

looking for a new bigger tv but not looking to pay lots of money. are places like goodwill and salvation army a good place to save money and purchase 1? or is it a weary decision because the previous owner did not like it? any other places to buy a television cheap? thanks!
