What do the stars mean on the captain patches on the nfl qb jerseys?

I see that under the "C" on the front of most qb jerseys there are four slots for stars with some being filled in. I noticed that Drew Brees has 3, Peyton Manning has 3, and Favre has 1. Anyone know what they represent?
