It's neither. I can see why you'd think so with the "...sister sat still as ..." which is a structure similar to similes. (Say that ten times!) A simile would be "..as still as a stone as she left..." or a metaphor would be "...she was stone as her sister left..."

The majority of the planet bases their lives around belief without evidence. The belief on faith alone. It's called religion. This is a far greater leap of faith then thinking you peed in the company coffee based on a rumor.
