1996 plymouth grand voyager help?

put gas in, had a half tank. ran fine for an hour then started spitting and sputtering like it was out of gas and it died. would not start back up. got it towed home and it started right up and ran for 45 minutes without dying. now the check engine light is on. what could be the problem?
